Road Rage!!

Introduction

Car chases are an integral part of action movies and have been for a very long time. It is a severe oversight not to have some method for dealing with car chases in Feng Shui. This is my, as of yet untested method of handling car chase.

The Rules

A car chase in the action movies is essentially a battle between the two drivers using the cars as the weapon. Invariably there is the chaser(s) and the chased, and in the end there should be a crash, a smashed fruit stand, and a multitude of beat up automobiles.

The first thing to do is to determine the chaser and the chased (which will also be referred to as the attacker and defender respectively). The next step is to determine the distance between cars. Since I can't seem to remember more the a couple of car chases right now, the default will be 2 car lengths(i.e. 20m). Anything larger and the cars would not be in the same camera shot.

Once the initial conditions are determined, then you handle the chase in two phases. First, there is closing. Here the chased describes a stunt (which the GM gives a difficulty too) then all parties roll a driving check. If the chaser gets a higher Outcome then the chased, then the distance closes by a car length(10m), otherwise the distance grows by a car length(10m). Failures indicate that a car was damaged during the stunt.

Second, once the vehicles are at range 0m or less, then use something like ordinary combat. However, use the speed, toughness, size, and wound points of the car instead of the driver. Keep in mind that speed is not how fast the car can go, but rather its responsiveness and ability to maneuver. Vehicles still closing, roll a driving check with a difficulty of 10, success indicates that they close by one car length.

Guns and Blast used by passengers during the chase can be used to damage the car, or the driver. The car has a dodge of equal the driving skill of the driver or the sorcery(gun) skill of an active passenger.

Crashes

Crashes occur when the driver has a dramatic failure or when the damage done to a car is 5 more then its toughness.

During a crash named characters take a number of wound points equal to the absolute value of the Outcome that resulted in the crash. This damage ignores armor, but not toughness.

An Example

Natasha, spy and secret warrior, has just escaped from the lair of the evil Dr. Tung. Fortunately, there just happens to be a Ferrari in the parking garage with only a mook inside. With a quick karate chop, she is off. However, she is being chased by the minions of Dr. Tung, after all now she knows his secret plans.

Natasha is in a sports car and is being chased by 2 mooks on motorcycles and a car full of mooks driven by Sammy Chueng. Natasha's Driving skill is 11, the mooks are 9 and Sammy also has an 11.

Sequence 1:Natasha is now 20 meters away from the bad guys. She decides that for her stunt she will go as fast as possible down the twisty road leading from the hideout, the GM assigns a mere 9 difficulty for this stunt. The outcomes are Natasha 9, Mook1 9, Mook2 5, and Sammy 11. This means that Mook1 stays at 20m, Mook2 falls behind to 30m and his motorcycle takes 4 points of damage, while Sammy gains 10m.

Sequence 2:Natasha gets a little worried, so says that she is going to cut through the woods straight to the next road, this a difficulty of 12. The outcomes are Natasha 11, Mook1 8, Mook2 8, and Sammy 19. This time the shortcut doesn't work out so well, Natasha's Sports Car takes 1 point of damage, the Mooks each lose 10m and take 3 points of damage, but Sammy's little car gains another car length on Natasha.

Sequence 3:Now we begin a normal combat round, but use the cars speed instead of the driver's. Natasha gets a 9, Sammy a 7, and the Mooks are closing.
